	Author JG Rives explains the story behind the story …

It all started last year, as I tucked my youngest daughters, Anna and Kate, into bed and made up a bedtime story as I did most nights. My wife, Aida, always asked me what the story was about, and as usual I ended up retelling most of the tale. Only this particular night, she suggested that I should write a book about some of the stories.

I had always wanted to write a book and dreamed of having one published some day, so I deliberated and decided – why not?

When I make up a story, I usually begin with a twist or distinguishing plot or maybe a surprise ending first. That is my favorite part - coming up with ideas that are unique. The easiest part is coming up with subplots, interesting storylines, and exciting situations. The hardest part is starting the story. I want the perfect beginning to assure the reader that the story will be appealing and worthwhile.

I began the story by imagining what it would be like if a nice, normal child sneaked down early Christmas morning to discover there were no presents under the tree. He would probably be upset. Would he go looking for them? Possibly. What if in his search he ran into other kids and people in much worse situations? Would he still care more about finding his presents? What if he found them? Then what?

The story unfolded from there, especially when I started thinking about the wonderful spirit of Christmas, and how most children are basically good kids. Of course I had to throw in some Christmas magic along the way!

Well, I finished the story by October, but I was oblivious to the many stages of actually publishing, printing, marketing, and selling a book. However, one year later, “Where Are My Christmas Presents?” is now available in local bookstores (Borders, Davis Kidd, and others). I have heard nothing but praises about the book, and I couldn’t be happier!

This book has been endorsed by the Dreams for Kids charity. A portion of proceeds will be donated to the DFK Holiday of Hope fund!
